Kodera ruins
This is a dam ruin from the Kofun period (4th to 5th centuries) located in the western suburbs of Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. Discovered in 1972 during construction work for a sewage treatment plant, it was initially mistaken for a buried house, but excavation revealed that it was the remains of three dams measuring 13m, 24m, and 8m in width to secure water for irrigation. The dam consisted of a row of piles driven perpendicular to the flow of water, a log about 15cm in diameter placed horizontally on the upstream side, and a piece of wood several centimeters in diameter placed in a gabled shape in the direction of the flow of water. An intake for irrigation water was provided upstream of that. Using some construction waste, the Kofun period architecture is now being restored.
