Whiskey Rebellion

...An uprising in 1794 by farmers in western Pennsylvania in the United States in opposition to new tax laws imposed by the federal government. It is also called the Whiskey Rebellion. The Internal Excise Tax Act, enacted in 1791 based on a proposal by Secretary of the Treasury A. Hamilton, imposed a tax on domestically produced whiskey in order to raise funds for the payment of huge interest on public debt.
