Sarasvati River (English spelling)

Japanese: サラスバティー[川]（英語表記）Sarasvatī

It originates in the Siwalik Hills in Sirmul District at the southern tip of Himachal Pradesh in northwest India, flows southwest along the northwest border of Haryana, joins the Ghaggar River and disappears into the Thar Desert. It is about 330 km long. It is one of the holiest rivers for Hindus, and Saraswati, the goddess of learning and arts, is named after this river. It is depicted in the Rig Veda as a great river flowing into the Arabian Sea. The dried-up old riverbeds of the Ghaggar and other rivers remaining in the Thar Desert are believed to be the former course of the river.

インド北西部，ヒマーチャル･プラデーシュ州南端のシルムル県のシワリク丘陵に発し，ハリヤーナー州北西境を南西流したのち，ガッガル川に合流してタール砂漠中に消失する。全長約330km。ヒンドゥー教徒の最も聖なる川の一つで，学問と技芸の神サラスバティーはこの川に由来する。《リグ･ベーダ》にはアラビア海に流入する大河として描かれている。タール砂漠中に残るガッガル川などの干上がった旧河床は，かつての流路とされる。
