Kingi, W.

...The Maori rebelled against the pakeha (white people) turning their traditional land into farms and ranches, and in 1858 chose the chief of the Waikato region of the North Island as the Maori King, trying to stop the white people from buying up land through a tribal alliance. In 1860, in Taranaki in the southern part of the North Island, 1,500 Maori warriors under Chief Kingi (1795-1882) clashed with 3,000 British and colonial soldiers and volunteers over land sales, which triggered the Maori Wars to spread throughout the North Island. Fighting continued sporadically until 1872, and the Maori King held out until 1881.
