The chemical formula is Na ₂ O. In addition to this composition, there is also sodium peroxide, Na ₂ O ₂ , which contains the peroxide ion O ₂ ^2- . Na ₂ O is a colorless powder. Its structure is an inverse fluorite type, with O at the Ca position and Na at the F position of a CaF ₂ cubic lattice. The lattice constant a = 5.55 Å. Specific gravity is 2.27. When heated above 400°C, it decomposes into Na ₂ O ₂ and Na. It is hygroscopic and reacts violently with water to produce sodium hydroxide. It also absorbs carbon dioxide to become sodium carbonate.

化学式Na₂O。ナトリウムの酸化物には，この組成のほかに過酸化物イオンO₂^2－を含む過酸化ナトリウムNa₂O₂がある。Na₂Oは無色の粉末。構造は逆蛍石型で，CaF₂立方格子のCaの位置にOが，Fの位置にNaが配置した形をとる。格子定数a＝5.55Å。比重2.27。400℃以上に熱するとNa₂O₂とNaに分解する。吸湿性で，水と激しく反応して水酸化ナトリウムを生ずる。また二酸化炭素を吸収して炭酸ナトリウムになる。
