The chemical formula is Na 2 O. In addition to this composition, there is also sodium peroxide, Na 2 O 2 , which contains the peroxide ion O 2 2- . Na 2 O is a colorless powder. Its structure is an inverse fluorite type, with O at the Ca position and Na at the F position of a CaF 2 cubic lattice. The lattice constant a = 5.55 Å. Specific gravity is 2.27. When heated above 400°C, it decomposes into Na 2 O 2 and Na. It is hygroscopic and reacts violently with water to produce sodium hydroxide. It also absorbs carbon dioxide to become sodium carbonate.
