Ryozo Iogi

A hard-line foreign journalist from the Meiji to Showa periods. His pen name was Hyotei. He was born in Matsuyama (Ehime Prefecture). He initially studied medicine. In 1895, he joined the Nippon magazine. In 1900, he joined Konoe Atsumaro's National Alliance Association and assisted in editing the association's journal, Toyo. In 1901, he returned to Nippon and became its editor-in-chief. In 1903, he joined the Anti-Russian Comrades Association, and in 1903, he held a national conference in Hibiya with Kono Hironaka and others to oppose the Portsmouth Peace Treaty. In 1928, he joined Seikyosha, the publisher of Nippon and the Japanese, and became its president. In 1922, he participated in the anti-London Naval Treaty movement and in 1923, the movement to clarify the national polity. 明治から昭和にかけての対外硬ジャーナリスト。号は飄亭。松山(愛媛県)の生まれ。最初は医学を学ぶ。明治28(1895)年『日本』に入社。33年近衛篤麿の国民同盟会に参加し,同会の機関誌『東洋』の編集に協力。34年『日本』に復社し,編集長となる。36年対露同志会に参加し,38年日比谷でポーツマス講和条約に反対する国民大会を河野広中らと開く。昭和3(1928)年『日本及日本人』の政教社に入り,社主。5年ロンドン海軍軍縮条約反対運動,10年国体明徴運動に参加した。また俳人として,同郷の正岡子規と交友があった。<参考文献>『日本及日本人』351号(五百木良三追悼号)
