The Three Great Dojos of Edo

Three sword-fighting dojos were very popular in Edo during the late Edo period. They are Genbukan, run by Chiba Shusaku (Hokushin Itto-ryu), Renpeikan, run by Saito Yakuro (Shinto Munen-ryu), and Shigakukan, run by Momoi Shunzo (Kagami Shin Akechi-ryu). 幕末期の江戸で高い人気を誇った3つの剣術道場。千葉周作（北辰一刀流）の玄武館、斎藤弥九郎（神道無念流）の練兵館、桃井(もものい)春蔵（鏡新明智流）の士学館を指す。幕末から明治維新にかけて活躍した多くの人物が、これらの道場で剣術を学んだ。
