A Western-style painter from the Meiji and Taisho periods. The second son of Goseda Horyu. Born in Edo. Maiden name Morita. Pen name Shokai. In 1866 (Keio 2), he studied oil painting under the Englishman Wagman in Yokohama. He was hailed as a child prodigy from an early age and showed precocious artistic talent. In 1874 (Meiji 7), he moved to Tokyo and opened a private school in Mukojima. He enrolled in the Kobu Bijutsu Gakko when it was founded in 1876, but dropped out the following year. In 1880, with the support of Kishida Ginko and others, he traveled to France and studied under Léon Bonnat. In 1881, he was selected for his first exhibition at the Paris Salon. Some of his masterpieces from his time studying abroad include "Doll's Kimono" and "Puppet Play" (Tokyo University of the Arts). After returning to Japan in 1890, he participated in the formation of the Meiji Bijutsu Kai (Meiji Art Association). He served in the First Sino-Japanese War, but his subsequent paintings did not perform well.

明治大正期の洋画家。五姓田芳柳の次男。江戸生まれ。旧姓森田。号照海。慶応2(1866)年横浜で英人ワーグマンに師事し油絵を学ぶ。幼時から神童とうたわれ早熟な画才を発揮した。明治7(1874)年東京へ移り,向島に家塾を開く。9年工部美術学校創設とともに入学したが翌年退学。13年岸田吟香らの援助で渡仏,レオン・ボナに師事する。14年パリのサロンに初入選。留学期の作品に「人形の着物」,「操芝居」(東京芸大蔵)などの秀作がある。22年帰国後,明治美術会の結成に参加する。日清戦争に従軍したが,その後の画作はふるわなかった。
