A single-sided drum shaped like a sake cup. Also called a darabukka. Widely found in Islamic regions of the Middle East and North Africa. The frame is made of pottery, wood, or metal, and is covered with sheep or camel leather. The leather surface is fixed with glue or tacks, while the bottom is left open. It is usually held in one arm or between the legs and struck with the fingers. The finger movements are technical and complex. Used in folk and classical music. There are similar drums such as the tombak (Dombek, Iran), delbokka (Morocco, Algeria), and devrek (Turkey), but the size and shape vary depending on the region.
