Saxo Grammaticus
Around 1150 - 1220
Danish historian. After studying in France, he became secretary to the Danish Archbishop Absalon. He wrote Gesta Danorum in Latin at the request of the archbishop, which consists of 16 volumes covering the period from legendary prehistoric times to the defeat of the Wends in 1185. The legendary period is a treasure trove of Norse mythology and heroic legends (such as the legend of Hamlet), while the historical period provides invaluable material for research into the politics, law, economy, religion, and folklore of the time.
