One of the five Great Lakes in North America. With an area of 82,367 km2, ^it is the second largest in the world after the Caspian Sea. It is also the largest freshwater lake in the world. The average lake surface elevation is 183 m, the maximum depth is 406 m, and the shoreline is approximately 4,768 km long. In winter, the lake freezes over near the shore. It is a huge glacial lake on the border between the United States and Canada, and includes islands such as Isle Royale. Duluth is located at the western end. The eastern end is connected to Lake Huron by the Sault Ste. Mary Canal. The area along the west coast is the world's largest producer of iron ore.
