Originally, there was no distinction between old and new goods exchanged at the markets. In recent years, old things have become popular not only for practical purposes but also as decorative items and collectibles, and markets selling second-hand furniture, watches, tableware, clothing, etc., are bustling and are also called "junk markets." Kyoto's "Kobo Market" and "Tenjin Market" are thought to have become regular events around the mid-Edo period, and now vendors gather from all over the country. The Kobo Market, held on the 21st of each month (the anniversary of Kobo Daishi's death) in the grounds of Toji Temple, features 1,500 stalls, and in December it is known as "Shimei Kobo."
