Music of the Byzantine Empire. Its greatest legacy is the system of sacred songs (in Greek, monophonic, unaccompanied) used for the liturgy of the Byzantine Church. It is particularly notable for the large number of easy-to-sing syllabic works and ornate coloratura compositions in the hymn forms (troparion, kontakion, canon) that developed remarkably throughout the period. The vast repertoire of Byzantine sacred songs from the 9th to 15th centuries has survived in manuscripts with neumes (musical notation), and this system of notation (Byzantine neumes) is well known.
