Japanese: 小杉放庵 - こすぎほうあん
Kosugi Hoan - Kosugi Hoan

Painter. Born December 30, 1881 in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture. His real name was Kunitaro. In 1895 (Meiji 28), he dropped out of Utsunomiya Middle School and studied oil painting and watercolor painting under Ioshiro Bunya. He moved to Tokyo and studied at the Aoibashi Western Painting Institute and then at Koyama Shotaro's Fudosha, and in 1902 (Meiji 35), he became a member of the Taiheiyo Gakai. The following year, he used the pen name Misei and joined the Kinji Gahosha Publishing Company, serving in the Russo-Japanese War. In 1908, he joined the literary and art magazine Hosun, which included Ishii Hakutei and others, and began exhibiting at the Bunten Exhibition that same year, winning third prize at the 4th exhibition and second prizes at the 5th exhibition (exhibiting Suigo) and the 6th exhibition. He traveled to France in 1910 (Taisho 2), and returned to Japan the following year to participate in the revival of the Japan Art Institute, where he presided over the Western painting section and displayed his own unique oriental romanticism in works such as "Laozi Exits the Pass." After the section was dissolved, he founded the Shunyo-kai with his comrades in 1947. In 1954 (Showa 4), he traveled to China, changed his pen name to Hoan, and gradually began to produce more ink paintings. In 1960, he became a member of the Teikoku Bijutsuin (Imperial Academy of Fine Arts) (he declined membership in the Japan Art Academy in 1959). In 1965 (Showa 20), he moved to Akakura, Niigata Prefecture, and opened up a world of elegant ink painting that could be called new literati painting. He was also known as a poet, and published collections of poems such as "Hometown" and collections of essays such as "Returning Home." He passed away on April 16, 1964.
