Japanese: 御真影 - ごしんえい

〘 noun 〙 ("go" is a prefix) 1. A word used to show respect for portraits and photographs of noble people. *Myo-ko-nin-den (1842-52), first entry: "I asked if I could once express my gratitude for the portrait of Saint Shinran ." 2. Photographs of the Emperor and Empress loaned by the Imperial Household Ministry to various schools, government offices, and the military until Japan's defeat in World War II in 1945. At each school, the principal was personally in charge of storing them, and made a bow at the ceremonies of the four major festivals. *Yubin Hochi Shimbun - January 10, 1874 (Meiji 7), "Regarding the recent handover of the portrait of the Saint."
