A city in the west of Aomori Prefecture, spreading from the central to northern part of the Tsugaru Plain. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It is located on the alluvial plain of the Iwaki River, and the north faces the Sea of Japan, with Lake Jusan. It is said that it got its name from the five wide riverbeds. The city developed from a new rice field settlement in the early Edo period. It is located to the west of Aomori City, and is the junction of the Gono Line and Tsugaru Railway, and is also the center of bus transportation and the commercial center of the surrounding area. Tsugaru rice and apples are produced in abundance and distributed. The summer festival, centered on the insect sending and fire festival in early August, attracts many tourists. In March 2005, Kanagi Town and Ichiura Village of Kitatsugaru County were incorporated. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 404.18 km 2 . 58,421 people (2010). 青森県西部,津軽平野中部から北部にかけて広がる市。1954年市制。岩木川の沖積地にあり,北部は日本海に面し,十三湖がある。5ヵ所に広い川原があったのでこの名があるという。市街は江戸初期の新田集落から発達した。青森市の西隣に位置し,五能線と津軽鉄道の分岐点で,バス交通の中心でもあり,周辺の商業の中心地となっている。津軽米,リンゴを多産し集散する。8月上旬の虫おくりと火まつりを中心とした夏まつりは,多くの観光客を集めている。2005年3月北津軽郡金木町,市浦村を編入。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。404.18km2。5万8421人(2010)。
