1871‐1932 Egyptian poet. Known by the honorific title "Poet of the Nile" because he was born on a boat on the Nile. Born in Upper Egypt to an engineer father and a Turkish mother. He entered the military academy in Cairo, where he was demoted to Sudan for his intense political activism. He was discharged there as well for his rebelliousness against his British commander, and lived in Cairo for a long time without a job. He wrote poetry with political and social themes, and in the latter half of his life he got a job at the Dar al-Qutb (library), but then suddenly became conservative.
