Hafiz Ibrāhīm

1871‐1932
Egyptian poet. Known by the honorific title "Poet of the Nile" because he was born on a boat on the Nile. Born in Upper Egypt to an engineer father and a Turkish mother. He entered the military academy in Cairo, where he was demoted to Sudan for his intense political activism. He was discharged there as well for his rebelliousness against his British commander, and lived in Cairo for a long time without a job. He wrote poetry with political and social themes, and in the latter half of his life he got a job at the Dar al-Qutb (library), but then suddenly became conservative.

エジプトの詩人。ナイル川の船上で生まれたことから〈ナイルの詩人〉という尊称によって知られる。上エジプトに技術官の父とトルコ女性の母との間に生まれる。カイロの兵学校に入り，そこで激しい政治運動を展開したためスーダンに左遷される。そこでもイギリス人指揮官に対する反抗ゆえに退役させられ，カイロで職もなく長いこと暮らす。政治的･社会的内容をもつ詩作を行い，後半生はダール･アルクトブ(図書館)に職を得るが，一転して保守的になる。
