Kojima Goryu

Japanese:
Kojima Goryu
Based in Shin-Kumano Gongen (Hayashi, Kurashiki City) on the Kojima Peninsula in Okayama Prefecture, Kumano-style Shugen was influential in the Middle Ages and early modern times. At the end of the Heian period, Kojima was home to the Kumano Shrine, where Kumano Gongen was enshrined and became the base of Kumano Yamabushi. Later, during the Jokyu War, Emperor Gotoba's son, Prince Yorihito, was exiled to this area, and his five sons established five schools: Sontakuin, Taihoin, Kentokuin, Denpoin, and Hoonin. The descendants of these five schools were active around Shin-Kumano Gongen, and were known as the Kojima Goryu, Goryu Shugen, and Kugyo Yamabushi.
