...The outer layer of the shell is removed to reveal the nacreous layer, which is then cut into strips and polished to make surigai (surigai shells), which are then glued together to create patterns. This is also called aogai work. Pearls are also revered as one of the seven treasures, and Ise pearls have been considered the best in Japan since ancient times. They were apparently taken from abalone, as in the poem "Shimazu, the white water man of the Ise Sea, took the abalone pearls, and love continued to flourish" (Manyoshu, Volume 7), but later they came to be obtained from pearl oysters and sea mussels as well....
