Takeshi Takarabe

A naval officer. Born in Miyazaki Prefecture on April 7, 1867 (Keio 3). Graduated from the Naval Academy in 1889 (Meiji 22) and the Naval War College in 1893. After serving in the Sino-Japanese War, he was stationed in England, and served as a staff officer at the Imperial General Headquarters during the Russo-Japanese War. He served as Vice Minister of the Navy from 1909 (Meiji 42) to 1914 (Taisho 3). He was temporarily placed on hold due to the Siemens incident, but was restored and promoted to Admiral in 1919. In 1923, he became Minister of Navy in the Kato Tomosaburo cabinet, and subsequently served as Minister of Navy in the second Yamamoto Gonbei cabinet, the first and second Kato Takaaki cabinets, the first Wakatsuki Reijiro cabinet, and Hamaguchi Osachi cabinet. He signed the London Naval Treaty as plenipotentiary, but was attacked by opponents and was transferred to the reserves in 1932. He married the daughter of Gonbei Yamamoto and was seen as a supporter of the Satsuma faction. He died on January 13, 1949.

海軍軍人。慶応(けいおう)3年4月7日宮崎県に生まれる。1889年(明治22)海軍兵学校卒業、1893年海軍大学校卒業。日清(にっしん)戦争従軍後イギリスに駐在、日露戦争では大本営の作戦参謀。1909年(明治42)から1914年(大正3)まで海軍次官。シーメンス事件で一時待命となったが復活、1919年海軍大将に進んだ。1923年加藤友三郎内閣の海相となり、以後、第二次山本権兵衛(やまもとごんべえ)、第一次・第二次加藤高明(かとうたかあき)、第一次若槻礼次郎(わかつきれいじろう)、浜口雄幸(はまぐちおさち)各内閣の海相を歴任した。ロンドン海軍軍縮会議の全権として条約に調印したが、反対派から攻撃され、1932年(昭和7)予備役編入。山本権兵衛の娘を妻とし薩摩(さつま)閥と目された。昭和24年1月13日死去。
