Spanish moss

Japanese: サルオガセモドキ（英語表記）Spanish moss

A string-like perennial plant of the Bromeliaceae family that hangs down from trees. The roots are degenerate, and the thin stems branch sparsely into two forks, sometimes hanging down to more than 5m. The leaves are linear, 3-5cm long, and covered with dirty silvery-white scales. These scales help absorb moisture from mist in the air. The inflorescence is terminal on the stem and consists of a single flower surrounded by lanceolate bracts. There are three sepals, and the petals are small and inconspicuous, with recurved purple tips. The capsule is about 1.5cm long, linear, and obtuse triangular in cross section.

木に着生垂下するパイナップル科のひも状の多年草。根は退化し，細い茎はまばらに二叉（にさ）状に分枝しながら，ときには5m以上に垂れ下がる。葉は線形で長さ3～5cm，表面はよごれた銀白色の鱗片毛で覆われている。この鱗片毛は空中の霧から水分を吸収するのに役だっている。花序は茎に頂生し，披針形の苞葉につつまれたただ1個の花からなる。萼片は3枚，花弁は小型で目だたず，先は反曲し紫色。蒴果（さくか）は1.5cmほど，線形で断面は鈍三角形。
