1888‐1958 Iraqi politician. A Sunni Muslim from Baghdad. He served in the Ottoman Empire, but participated in the Arab Revolt of 1916. When Britain installed Faisal I as King of Iraq in 1921, he became Iraqi army chief of staff and then Minister of Defense, and in 1930 became Prime Minister. The following year, a treaty with Britain established the formalities of "independence," and he remained at the heart of the government as a staunch pro-British leader, playing a key role in the Arab Unity Plan and the establishment of the Baghdad Pact, but was assassinated in the July 1958 revolution. The people of the capital dug up his grave and dragged his body through the city. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
