This is one of a group of viral diseases of insects, which mainly occur in lepidopteran insects such as silkworms. The pathogenic virus is a rod-shaped particle 250-350 nm long and 40-60 nm wide, and the particles are usually bundled together and enveloped in a common outer membrane. The nucleic acid is double-stranded DNA. It invades many tissues such as blood cells, tracheal membrane, adipose tissue, and dermis, and proliferates in the cell nucleus, eventually forming proteinaceous inclusion bodies (2-4 μm in diameter) called polyhedra, in which many viruses become embedded. At the final stage of infection, tissues collapse and polyhedra are released into the blood, causing the blood to turn milky white and pus-like.
