Ikedosoma gogoshimense (English name)

Japanese: ゴゴシマユムシ（英語表記）Ikedosoma gogoshimense

A worm of the Echinodermata family. It was first discovered on Gogo Island in Ehime Prefecture, hence the name. It also has other local names such as Inuyu, Inui, Modoki, and Inukouju. It is found from the Seto Inland Sea to Sagami Bay, and lives in J-shaped holes it digs in the sand and mud near the low-tide line. It is 5-10 cm long and 1-2.5 cm wide, and the spatula-shaped snout at the end of its head stretches out to about half its body length. Its body is dirty green with a purplish tinge, with several pale green vertical lines, and is covered with many dark green skin papillae.

キタユムシ科のユムシ動物。愛媛県の興居島から初めて得られたのでこの名がある。またイヌユ，イヌイ，モドキ，イヌコウジュなどの地方名がある。瀬戸内海から相模湾にかけて分布し，低潮線付近の砂泥中にJ字状の穴を掘ってすむ。体長5～10cm，幅1～2.5cmで，頭端にあるへら状の吻（ふん）はよくのびると体長の半分ほどになる。体は紫色を帯びた汚緑色で，数条の淡緑色の縦線があり，多くの深緑色の皮膚乳頭で覆われる。
