Japanese: 新井[市] - あらい

An old city located in the southwest of Niigata Prefecture, occupying the southern part of the Takada Plain and the surrounding mountainous areas. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The central city, where the Shinetsu Main Line runs, is where the Hokkoku Kaido and Iiyama Kaido roads split, and it was a post town and a market town. Since chemical factories moved in in 1935, it has developed into an industrial city, and since the 1970s industrial parks have been created, with the area producing chemical raw materials such as vinyl chloride and carbide, as well as semiconductor parts and electrical equipment. Tobacco leaf is also prolific. In April 2005, it merged with Myoko-Kogen Town and Myoko Village in Nakakubiki County to become a city, Myoko City. Area: ^{176.16 km2} . Population: 27,917 (2003).

新潟県南西部，高田平野南部と周辺の山地を占める旧市。1954年市制。信越本線が通じる中心市街は北国街道と飯山街道が分かれる地で，宿場町，市場町であった。1935年化学工業の工場が進出して以来工業都市として発展，1970年代以降工業団地が造成され，塩化ビニル，カーバイドなど化学原料のほか半導体部品や電気機器工業が盛んとなっている。葉タバコも多産。2005年４月中頸城郡妙高高原町，妙高村と合併し市制，妙高市となる。176.16km²。２万7917人（2003）。
