1818‐90 British bookseller. Born in London as the son of a second-hand bookseller, he opened his own stationery and bookstore in 1840, and began a book-lending business in 1842. Book-lending businesses had been widespread since the 18th century, but the establishment of a nationwide, cheap postal system in the 1840s and the rapid increase in the demand for reading as the literacy of the general public improved, especially in urban areas, made his business a success, and within ten years he had opened a large store in the city center and was lending out many books to customers throughout the country via the postal service.
