…In 1844, FW Bessel discovered that the motion of Sirius was not straight, but wobbled, and he believed that it was accompanied by a faint star that was too dim to be seen. This companion star, 10 magnitudes (10,000 times) fainter than the main star of Sirius, was discovered by AG Clark (1832-97) in 1862. The wobble of the main star's orbit was analyzed, and it was found that the companion star had a mass similar to that of the Sun (1.02 times). …
