Year of death: 16th February 1864 (23rd March 1864) Year of birth: Bunka 10.9.9 (1813.10.2) A patriot of the late Edo period. Commonly known as Rokuro. His pen names include Ikaruga Kakushi, Oka Ryo, and Kosai. He was the second son of Kensei of Sonkoji Temple, a Jodo Shinshu sect temple in Hayashimura, Shiki County, Kawachi Province (Fujiidera City, Osaka Prefecture). In 1828, he moved to Tokyo. He entered the Nishi Honganji Temple school and studied Buddhism. He later studied Japanese classics and waka poetry under Nakamura Yoshiomi of Settsu, Monk Mukan, Iida Hideo of Inaba, Kano Shohei of Kii, and Tomo Nobutomo of Edo. During this time, he returned to secular life and took the name Tomo Hayashi Rokuro Mitsuhira. He associated with patriots, mainly in Kyoto, and after the country was opened to the outside world, he advocated for the expulsion of foreigners. In 1861, he became a samurai of Chuguji Temple in Yamato, and was passionate about the restoration of the imperial tombs, conducting surveys of the tombs and receiving a letter of appreciation from the imperial court. Using the pseudonym Namiki Shunzo, he carried out his patriot activities, and in August of the same year, he joined the Tenchu-gumi's Yamato uprising. He served as a military staff officer and recorder, and sent out manifestos to Totsukawa-go and other areas to recruit participants. He fought against soldiers from various domains, but was defeated at Shirogane-ho and Wadamine, and was captured while fleeing towards Kyoto, and the following year he was executed by beheading along with twenty or so other comrades at Rokkaku Prison in Kyoto.
