Czechoslovakian poet. Although he grew up in a poor family, he studied hard and spent most of his short life as a student at university, moving from law to philosophy, and passed away shortly after graduation. He is considered a representative of the patriotic romanticism of the first half of the 19th century, and is also one of the most representative poets of the Czech Republic. He wrote poetry in German from his gymnasium days, but after entering university he began to write poetry in his native Czech, singing beautifully of nature and his homeland. The only work published during his lifetime was the lyric epic poem "May" (1836), but it immortalized his name and established the style of Czech poetry thereafter. After his death, many of his lyric poems and letters were edited, and his novel "Gypsies" (1867) was also published.
