A publicity officer at a theater in the Edo period. On the day before the opening or during the changeover, they stood on a platform at the entrance to the theater, dressed in flashy costumes, in pairs, holding up fans, reciting the title and role of the kyogen, and using vocal tones to hype up the performance. They were abolished in 1872 (Meiji 5). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
