A town in Nishiusuki County in the northern part of Miyazaki Prefecture, upstream of the Gokase River. Most of the town is mountainous and wilderness, and the town is dedicated to agriculture and forestry. It has had a long history of transportation with Higo (Kumamoto Prefecture), and National Route 218 runs through the town. In recent years, a ski resort has been built. Area: 171.73 km2 . 宮崎県北部，五ヶ瀬川上流の西臼杵(にしうすき)郡の町。大部分が山林原野であり，農林業を営む。古来肥後（熊本県）との交通が盛んで，国道218号線が通じる。近年，スキー場が造成された。171.73km2。4427人（2010）。
