A town in Nishiusuki County in the northern part of Miyazaki Prefecture, upstream of the Gokase River. Most of the town is mountainous and wilderness, and the town is dedicated to agriculture and forestry. It has had a long history of transportation with Higo (Kumamoto Prefecture), and National Route 218 runs through the town. In recent years, a ski resort has been built. Area: 171.73 km2 .
