Common sandpiper

Japanese: イソシギ - いそしぎ(英語表記)common sandpiper
Common sandpiper

A bird of the family Scolopacidae in the order Charadriiformes. It breeds widely in central Eurasia, and some migrate south in winter. In Japan, it breeds commonly in Hokkaido and Honshu, and nests and eggs were discovered in Kumamoto Prefecture in 1980 and Miyazaki Prefecture in 1982. It is about 20 cm long and 11 cm long. The upper surface of the body is gray-brown with fine black spots, and the eyebrows are white. The face, neck, and chest have gray-brown vertical spots, and the abdomen is white. When flying, a white band appears on the wings. In the breeding season, it lives on the banks of inland rivers and lakes, and in the non-breeding season, it can be seen in coastal coves, rocky shores, and the skirts of breakwaters. It walks on the ground at the water's edge, swinging its tail up and down, and searches for animal matter as food. It often flies low from shore to shore, flapping its wings shallowly in spasms, and makes a thin, "twirling" sound. During the breeding season, they fly around making a "tsuchi-chi, tsuchi-chi" sound. They make a shallow depression at the base of a grass plant, lay dead grass on it, and lay four eggs. The chicks are covered in downy feathers and leave the nest soon after hatching.
