...What made these gypsy musicians famous was the work of the so-called gypsy orchestras, ensembles of string instruments such as violins and folk instruments such as cimbaloms, which led European popular music from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. The orchestras played any popular music that was popular at the time, but their free-flowing, extremely passionate and improvisational style of playing and their main repertoire of Hungarian folk music, verbunkos (derived from military recruitment marches), also influenced art music, providing the material for works by Liszt and Brahms that bear the title "Hungary." In contrast to the music of urban gypsies, which is mainly instrumental, the music of rural gypsies is mainly vocal.
