The orchestras played any popular music that was popular at the time, but their free-flowing, extremely passionate and improvisational style of playing and their main repertoire of Hungarian folk music, verbunkos (derived from military recruitment marches), also influenced art music, providing the material for works by Liszt and Brahms that bear the title "Hungary."
