Go'o Shrine

It is located in Shimochoja-machi, Karasuma-dori, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto City. The deities enshrined are Wake no Kiyomaro and Wake no Hiromushi, with Fujiwara no Momokawa and Michi no Toyonaga also enshrined. Kiyomaro was famous for defeating Dokyo's ambitions, and was highly trusted by Emperor Kanmu. Initially, a shrine to Kiyomaro was established at Takao-san Jingo-ji Temple, but in 1851 (Kaei 4) Emperor Komei bestowed upon it the title of Go'o Daimyojin and the rank of Shoichii, and in 1874 (Meiji 7) it was ranked as a special government-sponsored shrine and was called Go'o Shrine. In 1886, a shrine building was built at the current location and the shrine was moved, and Hiromushi and two other deities were enshrined there, and in 1915 (Taisho 4), Hiromushi was added as the main deity. The annual festival (Go-o Festival) is held on April 4th. On November 1st, a special ritual called the Inoko Festival is held.

京都市上京(かみぎょう)区烏丸通(からすまどおり)下長者町に鎮座。祭神は和気清麻呂(わけのきよまろ)、和気広虫(ひろむし)で、藤原百川(ももかわ)、路豊永(みちのとよなが)を配祀(はいし)する。清麻呂は道鏡の野望を砕いたことで名高く、桓武(かんむ)天皇の信任が厚かった。初め高雄(たかお)山神護寺に清麻呂の霊社を設けたが、1851年（嘉永4）孝明(こうめい)天皇より護王大明神の神号、正一位の神階が宣下され、1874年（明治7）別格官幣社に列し、護王神社と称した。1886年、現在地に社殿を造営、遷座が行われ、広虫ほか2柱を配祀、1915年（大正4）広虫を主祭神に加えた。例祭（護王大祭）は4月4日。11月1日には特殊神事の亥子祭(いのこさい)が行われる。
