Photography, in its own function, is primarily a technique for recording. What makes it different from painting and photography is that the same results can be obtained no matter who takes the photograph of the same subject, and no matter how many times it is taken, assuming there is no change over time, by depicting linear perspective according to certain laws using a lens, depicting shapes and textures in minute detail, and depicting tones that reproduce the light and dark of a subject as they really are. If the ideal is a mechanical, objective record free of preconceptions and interpretations, then photography is the perfect embodiment of the art of recording.

写真術はそれ自体の機能として，まず第一義的に記録の技術である。絵画と写真が異なる点は，レンズによる一定の法則に従った(線)遠近法の描写，形態と材質感の克明で微細な描写，相対的ではあるが光の明暗を現実のままに再現する階調の描写などが，同じ被写体なら誰が撮影しても，また時間の経過にともなう変化がないとすれば繰り返し何度撮影しても，同一の結果が得られることである。もし予断や解釈を排除した，機械的･客観的な記録が理想であるとすれば，写真はまさに記録術の申し子だといえる。
