A unit organized by the Navy for land combat. The U.S. Marine Corps was organized separately from the Army, Navy, and Air Force for amphibious operations. The Japanese Navy organized temporary marine units by giving warship crew members land weapons when necessary. There were also cases where special marine units were organized for the purpose of land warfare, such as the Shanghai Special Marine Corps and operations in the southern regions during World War II.
