A unit organized by the Navy for land combat. The U.S. Marine Corps was organized separately from the Army, Navy, and Air Force for amphibious operations. The Japanese Navy organized temporary marine units by giving warship crew members land weapons when necessary. There were also cases where special marine units were organized for the purpose of land warfare, such as the Shanghai Special Marine Corps and operations in the southern regions during World War II. 海軍が陸上戦闘のため編制した部隊。米国の海兵隊は上陸作戦などのため，陸・海・空軍とは独立に編制。日本の海軍では，必要に応じ軍艦乗組員に陸上兵器をもたせて臨時に陸戦隊を編制した。上海特別陸戦隊や第２次大戦中の南方諸地域の作戦のように，本来陸戦を目的とした特別陸戦隊を編制したこともあった。
