A Rinzai sect monk in the Kamakura period. He was the son of Emperor Gosaga. He entered the gates of Enni Ben'en at Tofuku-ji Temple in Kyoto and received the full precepts, and then served Gottan Funei at Kencho-ji Temple. He retreated to Shimotsuke Nasu (Otawara City, Tochigi Prefecture) and founded Ungan-ji Temple, where Zen monks flocked to him, fascinated by his style. When Mugaku Sogen came to Japan, he visited him at Kencho-ji Temple and Engaku-ji Temple, received his seal of approval, and inherited the Dharma. At the time, Kenjitsu was revered as one of the two greatest monks of the land, along with Nanpo Jomyo of Sofukuji Temple in Yokodake (Fukuoka Prefecture). Many great Zen masters came from his school, including Muso Soseki, Tengan Eko (1273-1335), and Taihei Myojun (date of birth and death unknown), and they formed the mainstream of the Kanto Zen temples at the end of the Kamakura period. His imperial posthumous title was Bukkoku Ougo Kosai Kokushi. His works include collections of sayings and waka poetry. [D.T.
