In a broader sense, it refers to the English spoken in the United States, which is roughly divided into three dialects: Northern (New England), Central, and Southern. In a narrower sense, it refers to words and idioms that are unique to the United States and do not exist in British English, and in this sense, it is also called Americanism. This includes usages that are no longer used in Britain, such as fall, which means "autumn," loanwords unique to the United States, such as moccasin, which originates from Native American languages, and prairie, which originates from French, words that have developed into meanings different from those in Britain, such as corn, which means corn, and words created in the United States, such as cocktail and know-how. In addition, we can also add pronunciations (hot [American hɑt; British hɔt]) and spellings (American plough; British plough) that are different from those in Britain.
