After World War II, in the midst of the global trend for democracy, Turkey moved to a multi-party system in 1946. In the 1946 general election, the Republican People's Party barely managed to retain its position as the largest party and hold the reins of power, but in the 1950 general election, the Democratic Party (Demokrat Parti, founded in 1946 by anti-mainstream Republican People's Party members) won a landslide victory and the Democratic Party, led by Bayar (the third president and a fighter in the Fatherland Liberation Movement) and Menderes (a landowner from Western Anatolia), ruled Turkey for ten years until May 1960. The Democratic Party promoted large-scale economic development policies, such as modernizing agriculture, developing industry, and expanding social capital such as electricity and roads, based on improved agricultural production due to good harvests, increased foreign demand due to the Korean War, and ample funds from economic aid under the Marshall Plan. However, from the 1950s onwards, problems such as financial difficulties, foreign currency shortages due to trade deficits, inflation, imbalances in social development, and corruption among government leaders came to the surface. …
