Revolution - Kōten

Planets revolve around the Sun. This motion is called revolution. The term revolution is used more broadly; it also refers to the motion of a moon around a planet, and the motion of stars in a binary star system around their common center of gravity. According to Newton's first law of mechanics, an object that is not acted upon by an external force moves at a uniform speed in a straight line. Therefore, the orbital motion of planets and moons is evidence that a force is acting, and that force is the force of attraction between the orbiting object and the object at the center, in other words, gravitational force.

惑星は太陽の周りを周回運動する。この運動を公転という。公転という用語は、さらに広く使用される。すなわち、衛星が惑星を回る運動、連星系をつくっている恒星が互いの共通重心を巡る運動も公転とよんでいる。ニュートンの力学第一法則により、外力が働かない物体は等速直線運動をする。ゆえに、惑星や衛星が周回運動をするのは、力が働いている証拠であって、その力は周回する物体と中心にある物体とが引き合う力、つまり引力である。
