Detention house - kouchisho

The name given under the Ministry of Justice Establishment Act refers to a penal institution that primarily houses and treats detainees and those on death row. Based on the "Prison, Juvenile Prison and Detention House Organization Regulations (Ministry of Justice Ordinance No. 3 of 2001)", as of 2010, main detention houses were established in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo, Tachikawa City, Nagoya City, Kyoto City, Osaka City, Kobe City, Hiroshima City, and Fukuoka City, and there are 104 branch detention houses throughout the country.

法務省設置法上の名称で、主として被勾留(こうりゅう)者や死刑確定者等を収容し、処遇する刑事施設のこと。「刑務所、少年刑務所及び拘置所組織規則（平成13年法務省令第3号）」に基づき、2010年時点で、東京都葛飾区、立川市、名古屋市、京都市、大阪市、神戸市、広島市、福岡市に本所としての拘置所が設けられ、そのほかに全国104の拘置支所が置かれている。
