During the reign of Antiochus I, it became the capital of the Seleucid Kingdom of Syria, and flourished as a hub for overseas trade through the outer port of Seleucia Pieria, and for trade linking the Mediterranean Sea and the Euphrates River. It was a contact point between the Oriental and Hellenistic civilizations, and was inhabited by a variety of peoples, including Macedonians, Greeks, and Jews, and is said to have had a population of 500,000 in the 2nd century BC. …
