The modern naturalist Cuvier, who discovered this in the Hectocotylid, mistook it for a parasite that lives in the mantle cavity of octopuses and named it Hectocotylus octopodis (1829), and since then, the hectocotyls of cephalopods are still called hectocotylus today.
