Urbain

French chemist and mineralogist. He graduated at the top of his class from the École d'Physique et d'École de Paris in 1894. Influenced by P. Curie, who taught at the same school, he decided to become a researcher. He served as a personal assistant to C. Friedel from 1895 to 1898, and in 1899 obtained his doctorate from the University of Paris with a thesis on rare earths. In 1906 he became an assistant professor of analytical chemistry at the Sorbonne, and in 1908 he became professor of mineral chemistry. From 1928 he served as director of the Institute of Chemistry and the Institute of Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Paris. He conducted research on rare earths, in particular separating lutetium from ytterbium. He also served as chairman of the International Commission on Atomic Weights after measuring the atomic weights of rare earths. From 1912 onwards he conducted theoretical research, attempting to expand on A. Werner's complex theory.

フランスの化学者，鉱物学者．パリ市立物理化学学校を1894年に首席で卒業．同校で教えていたP. Curie(キュリー)の影響で研究者を志す．1895～1898年C. Friedel(フリーデル)の私設助手を務めた後，1899年に希土類に関する論文でパリ大学から学位を取得．1906年ソルボンヌ大学の分析化学の助教授になり，1908年に鉱物化学教授となる．1928年からはパリの化学研究所と物理化学生物学研究所所長を務めた．希土類の研究を行い，とくにイッテルビウムからルテチウムを分離した．希土類の原子量測定から国際原子量委員会委員長も務めた．1912年以降は理論的な研究を行い，A. Werner(ウェルナー)の錯体理論の拡張を試みた．
