...A hilly area in southeastern Hokkaido, east of the Tokachi Plain, that forms the border between the Tokachi and Kushiro subprefectures. It stretches south of the Akan volcanic group, with Ukotakinupuri (747m) as its main peak, and its generally low elevation of 200-400m reaches the Pacific Ocean. The Akan River, Charo River, and Shoro River run parallel to the hills to the south. It has long been a horse-breeding area, but after World War II it was converted to dairy farming. Forestry is carried out through forest development, mainly in national forests, and there is a lumber processing factory in Shiranuka Town at the southern end.
