Moving cluster

A group of dozens to hundreds of stars that share a common dynamic motion. Several are known, including the Hyades in Taurus (149 light years from Earth). The motion of stars in a single moving cluster is observed to converge to a single point on the celestial sphere or diverge from it. A moving cluster is a type of open cluster, and has this motion characteristic because it happens to be passing close to the Sun. It is the same principle as parallel rails that get thinner as they go further, and finally appear to converge to a single point. The distance to a moving cluster calculated using this motion characteristic is highly accurate, and it is one of the important standards for measuring distance in the universe.

力学的に共通な運動をもっている数十から数百個の星の集まり。おうし座のヒヤデス（地球からの距離149光年）を代表として、いくつか知られている。一つの運動星団に属する星々の動きは、天球上のある1点に収束するか、またはそこから発散しているように観測される。運動星団は散開星団の一種であり、それが偶然に太陽の近くを通過中であるためにこのような運動特性をもつ。平行なレールが先に行くにしたがって細くなり、ついには1点に収束して見えるのと同じ理屈である。この運動特性を利用して計算した運動星団までの距離は精度が高く、宇宙における距離尺度の重要な原器の一つとなっている。
