Espiritu Santo Island (English spelling)

Japanese: エスピリトゥ･サント[島]（英語表記）Espíritu Santo Island

The largest island in the New Hebrides (Republic of Vanuatu) in the southwest Pacific Ocean. Area 3,947 km2. Population including neighboring islands was 19,000 (1979). Spanish explorer Pedro Ferdinand de Quirós reached it in 1606 and named it Espiritu Santo, meaning "Land of the Holy Spirit." Luganville (population 7,000) on the southeastern tip is Vanuatu's second largest city, the capital of the northern administrative district, and the political and economic center. Most of the island, especially the western half, has rugged terrain (highest peak Mount Tabwemasana, 1,879 m), and remains undeveloped.
