...It developed from the monasteries and castles built by the Bishop of Metz at the end of the 10th century. Although it does not have a prominent industry, it is famous as the production center of the Imagerie d'Épinal, and the Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts has an international museum of popular prints attached to it. Popular prints became popular in Paris, Chartres, Orléans, and other places from around the 16th century, but from the middle of the 18th century, Épinal became the most active center. ...

...The influence and role of prints as a source of inspiration, both as illustrations for books and as reproduction prints, has spread to a much wider area than ever before, sometimes even across time, due to the diversity of printing cultures and their portability. In general, the popular nature of prints is certainly an important aspect, as is evident in religious amulets, game cards, and the "popular prints" such as the 18th and 19th century Imagerie d'Épinal prints, and they are also used to print patterns on wallpaper and fabrics, penetrating the daily lives of the masses. This is also helped by the fact that prints are relatively inexpensive.

…Inheriting the crudeness and low price of 15th-century woodblock prints, they stylized and legendary familiar religious images, historical events, current affairs, and relationships between men and women.
