Dieng Plateau

Japanese: ディエン高地 - ディエンこうち（英語表記）Dieng Plateau

A 2,060m-high caldera located about 120km northwest of Yogyakarta in central Java, Indonesia. It is famous for the ruins of stone Hindu temples dating from the Hindu Javanese period, from the 7th to the 13th century, scattered over an area of about 2km square. Dieng means "seat of the gods" in Sanskrit, and is a sacred place associated with the ancient Mataram dynasty, which began with King Sanjaya. It has been excavated several times since 1864, and as a result, inscriptions and statues of gods dating from 809 to 1210, as well as the remains of halls and dwellings, have been discovered.

インドネシアのジャワ島中部，ジョクジャカルタの北西約120kmにある標高2060mのカルデラ。約2km四方にわたって，ヒンドゥー･ジャワ期すなわち7世紀から13世紀に及ぶ石造のヒンドゥー教寺院跡が点在していることで有名である。ディエンとはサンスクリットで〈神々の座〉を意味し，サンジャヤ王に始まる古マタラム王朝ゆかりの聖地である。1864年以来数度にわたって発掘調査され，その結果809年から1210年にいたる碑文や神像，会堂や住居の遺構などが発見された。
