...The eikonal is useful for analytically discussing geometrical optical imaging, and the independent variables that describe it include the position coordinates P ₀ ( x ₀ , y ₀ , z ₀ ), P( x , y , z ), as well as the optical direction cosines ( p ₀ , q ₀ , r ₀ ) and ( p , q , r ), which are the direction cosines of the light rays multiplied by the refractive index of each space. The above V is called the point eikonal (expressed in position coordinates), but there are also the angular eikonal T ( p ₀ , q ₀ ; p , q ), which uses the optical direction cosines, and the mixed eikonal W ( p ₀ , q ₀ ; x , y ) and W ′ ( x ₀ , y ₀ ; p , q ), which uses both position coordinates and optical direction cosines. It is difficult to determine the eikonal precisely for an actual optical system, but it is possible to obtain it approximately and discuss aberrations analytically.
